Have you ever wondered why it’s so difficult to get rid of bad habits? Why is it nearly impossible for some behaviors to change? The reason being this: they are not just behaviors. They are part of our routine.

What is a habit? According to the Oxford Dictionary, a habit is a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.

Okay, so it’s a regular tendency. I tend to eat 3 meals a day, so if I were told that I would have to give up 2 of my 3 meals even one day, I would find this difficult to accomplish. I may even become irritable. However, if only for a day, I’m certain I could achieve it. But what if I had to give up those 2 meals for 3 days….or a week….or 3 weeks? Before some of you get after me about meals being necessary, don’t worry, this is not a diet plan or a thought we should be able to give up something good, rather an exercise to explore how difficult it is to give up a bad habit.

Ponder this: What is Ctrl+Alt+Delete used for on a computer keyboard? To answer this question for some of you who may not know: the key combination is used in a scenario when an operating system seems stuck or hung up in a process trying to continue with a program, and the user is waiting for everything to resume properly or as it normally would. The combination allows the user to regain control by ending the process with the option to either open that program or process back up, to choose to open another program, or to not choose that action at all again.

Now, think of yourself as the operation system (and user). I’ll use myself as an example with a hypothetical situation. I am sitting down to watch a television show. Suddenly my kids start arguing in the background. I pause my show and begin yelling at the top of my lungs and threatening punishments. I’ve done this at least a million times (exaggerating slightly) so it’s easy for me to do…..the only problem is that I keep coming up with the same problem. It doesn’t work. This process I’ve been trying to get to function is not working the way it should. I can open it and run it but it’s not continuing in a way that is condusive. The option I find I have is the one you’ve figured out. Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I was with my mom recently and my daughter was caught being rude to her sibling. My mom looked at her and said “control alt delete”

Control (take control of your behavior)

Alt (Alter your behavior into something new and good)

Delete (delete the old behavior that is bad)

If your operation system is running on the same processes that keep getting stuck and hung up and causing you frustration. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and you’ll have your solution.

Don’t be surprised that the same complacent behaviors are getting you nowhere fast😞

The next time you find yourself giving into a bad habit, don’t think of how daunting the process is. Go straight to correction with a Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
